Snow Canyon Lava Tubes

Entrance into a lava tube along the Lava Flow Trail.

Snow Canyon State Park is located in southeast Utah not far from St George and Ivins, Utah. This small state park is a beautiful gem that always delights. You start in the south with red rocks in multiple formation, often overlayed by black lava. As you go farther north the red Navajo Sandstone turns to white sandstone. In my opinion, if the park were in any other state, it would be declared a national park. The park is included in Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, but administered by Utah State Parks.

My wife and I accidentally discovered Snow Canyon State Park, while we were driving back from Pine Valley. We saw a small sign and we had the time, so we paid the entrance fee, and were amazed. The geology is complex, with multiple brightly colored layers. There are lava tubes and 36 miles of trails, all in this small park. Of particular interest is the Snow Canyon Overlook Trail that leads to Red Mountain Trail. Both, have wonderful views of the park formations, particularly at sunset.
